Shelby eulogizes Marzolo and then the Party members all mourn in their own ways. Eventually, the commander calls them into his office and asks the Party to share their knowledge of entering the dream state to protect themselves against the Nezahualpili. Shelby enters the dream state to contact Papantzlin to see if the Outcasts would be willing to give the dream gift to some of the garrison people. When Shelby arrives in the location where she believes the Outcasts might be but finds nothing but empty forest. Shelby brings Glowen into the dream state with her to see if she can find the Outcasts. Glowen is able to detect some sort of a heat haze over the area. Shelby calls out to the Outcasts and out of the haze comes Papantzlin. They discover that two days ago, the plant from the ancient tree wilted after doing well for several weeks. They discovered that the elder tree was not where he was, there are signs of a struggle with the Yaunti Malison and other trees, and they are trying to figure out if they should go deeper into Yaunti Malison territory to try to help the tree. Shelby states that the Party will come to the rescue of the tree, and also fills Papantzlin in on the commander's request to give some of the Tieflings the ability to enter the dream state.
Meanwhile, the commander provides a list of names for candidacy for entering the dream state: Weldeg, Weldon, Tsareth, and Harkad. The Party recommended that those with strong mental strength, spirituality, and cool under fire be considered. The Party intends to test the candidates in the dream state to see if they respond well under those conditions. After discovering that the tree has been moved from its usual location, they get ready to depart. As they are preparing, Cait approaches Darwynn to let her know that a giant is sitting outside of the garrison, and is singing about "little people". The party investigates, and finds a rather small giant singing a ballad about dancing small beings and amazing light displays. It turns out that Gunter is a bard and enjoys writing about island legends.
The Party continues towards the Outcasts and then Shelby contacts Papantzlin when they are 2 days out. Papantzlin indicates that the Yaunti are harvesting the flowers, and that the Party should proceed to that location to join up with some of the Quauhtliyaotl to stop the Yaunti. On the 14th day of travel, the Party is discovered by a band of Gruums while they are camping at night. Kayla sounds the alarm and wakes the rest of the party. Gunter and Glowen each kill a gruum raider and Kayla kills 1. Glowen delivers the killing blow to the ogre warhulk.
The party finds a note from Cannin saying that they should exchange the box for information on why the Yaunti are attacking the tree.
